Defending champions, Manchester City thrashed FC Copenhagen 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday to reach Champions League quarter-finals.

City qualified 6-2 on aggregate, having won the first leg 3-1 in Denmark.

City opened the scoring five minutes into the game. Julian Alvarez produced a cross from the resulting corner and found Manuel Akanji inside the box. He pulled the trigger and scored, sending the ball into the top of the net.

Four minutes later, City doubled their lead after a blunder. Keeper Kamil Grabara made a complete hash of a weak mid range shot from Julian Alvarez and let the ball squirmed into the net.

Copenhagen hit one back in the 29th minute of the game. Orri Oskarsson played a simple square pass into the feet of Mohamed Elyounoussi in the box, who composed himself and lashed the ball into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1.

Three minutes into first half added time, City made it 3-1. Rodri put a cross into the box and found Erling Haaland, who latched on to it and struck the ball into the bottom right corner.

In the 66th minute, Magnus Mattsson latched onto the ball after a scramble in the box, but his placed effort towards the left side of the goal was far too weak and Ederson made a simple save.

Two minutes into added time, Rico Lewis controlled a pass, went past a defender and curled a shot from the edge of the box right onto the crossbar.
