CAF Women’s Champions League: Edo Queens face uncertainty after Masar draw

Edo Queens held FC Masar of Egypt to a goalless draw on Wednesday in Morocco during the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League Group B match, leaving their semifinal hopes precariously in the balance.

The Nigerian and West African champions retain their top spot on the standings with four points, equal to their Egyptian counterparts, while Mamelodi Sundowns secure third place with three points following their decisive 4-0 victory over CBE in the group’s second match on Wednesday.

To progress to the last four, Moses Aduku’s team requires a minimum of a draw in their last group game against Sundowns at Larbi Zaouli Stadium, Casablanca, on Saturday, otherwise, Masar will claim the first qualification ticket if they overcome CBE in the group’s second fixture.

After a shock 1-0 defeat to Masar in their opening match, Sundowns now have their tails up after thumping CBE, receiving a much-needed lifeline ahead of the crucial decider on Saturday, where they will face the Nigerians to determine whether they continue with their title defence in Morocco.

Edo Queens are the third Nigerian club to feature in the continental showpiece after Rivers Angels in 2021 and Bayelsa Queens in 2022, with the country’s highest finish being a third-place record by the latter.
