CAF Rule Twist Offers Nigeria Fresh Hope in World Cup Qualifiers

A recent development in the CAF 2026 World Cup Qualifiers has opened a new window of opportunity for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, following Eritrea’s withdrawal from the tournament.

A recent development in the CAF 2026 World Cup Qualifiers has opened a new window of opportunity for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, following Eritrea’s withdrawal from the tournament.

According to CAF regulations, when ranking the four best runners-up across all groups, results against the bottom-placed team — or any withdrawn team — will be disregarded.

This rule adjustment could favour Nigeria. If Zimbabwe finish bottom of Group C, the Super Eagles will forfeit only two points (from their two draws against Zimbabwe), while other second-placed teams could lose between four to six points, potentially boosting Nigeria’s standing among the best runners-up.

With this advantage, football analysts believe Nigeria could still secure qualification by winning their remaining fixtures and improving their goal difference in matches that count.

If the Super Eagles finish second with at least 17 points, their chances of qualifying remain strong.

Optimism is once again high among fans and stakeholders as Nigeria prepares for its next round of crucial qualifiers.
