World-renowned heavyweight boxer, Anthony Joshua, was on Monday involved in a road traffic accident in Makun area of Ogun State, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The incident, according to eyewitness accounts, occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on a busy stretch of the highway, near Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound carriageway.

Eyewitnesses said the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua, with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck under circumstances that remain under investigation. The vehicle was reportedly part of a two-car convoy, which also included a Pajero SUV carrying members of his security detail.

Mr Adeniyi Orojo, an eyewitness at the scene, said Joshua was seated at the rear of the Lexus at the time of the crash. He added that there were four occupants in the vehicle — the driver, a front passenger, Joshua, and another passenger seated beside him.

“It was a two-vehicle convoy. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another passenger beside him. His security team was in the vehicle behind. After the crash, some of us immediately began rescue efforts and alerted other motorists for assistance,” Orojo said.

He disclosed that two occupants of the Lexus — the front passenger and the passenger seated beside Joshua — died at the scene, while Joshua sustained injuries described as minor. Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived at the scene shortly after the incident.

The Ogun State Police Command later confirmed the crash. In a brief statement to journalists, the Command’s spokesperson, Mr Oluseyi Babaseyi, said two persons lost their lives in the accident, while Joshua and one other individual were taken to hospital for medical attention.

“Yes, the crash has been confirmed. Two persons died, while Anthony Joshua and one other have been hospitalised and are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital,” he said.

Attempts to obtain further details from the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) Commandant, Mr Akinbiyi Babatunde, were unsuccessful as calls to his phone were not returned.

Meanwhile, news of the accident has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with fans and well-wishers expressing concern and offering prayers for Joshua’s recovery.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash, while further updates on Joshua’s condition are expected.
