Alaba International Market Unveils New Identity, Seeks Road Rehabilitation

LAGOS – The President of Alaba International Market (Electronics), High Chief Cornilus Nnamdi Amajuoyi, has officially unveiled the market’s new identity, describing the transformation as the fulfilment of a long-held vision to reposition one of Africa’s largest electronics trading hubs into a modern, globally recognised commercial destination.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Alaba Secretariat in Ojo, Lagos, High Chief Amajuoyi said the rebranding marks the beginning of a new era for the market, reflecting its status as an international centre for commerce and innovation.

He paid glowing tribute to the founding fathers of the market, whose vision and sacrifices, he said, laid the foundation for what has become one of Nigeria’s greatest economic success stories.

According to him, Alaba International Market has transformed countless lives by creating wealth, employment and business opportunities for Nigerians from diverse backgrounds.

“Alaba has succeeded in creating jobs for the entire nation. This concept has produced billionaires in different currencies of the world and has empowered thousands of entrepreneurs who today manage successful businesses,” he said.

The market president disclosed that Alaba currently provides direct business opportunities for more than 10,000 youths, many of whom are self-employed and making significant contributions to Nigeria’s economy. He noted that without the opportunities created by the market, many young people could have become a burden on society.

He also offered prayers for the deceased founders, acknowledging their enduring legacy and invaluable contributions to the growth of the market.

Speaking on the transformation project, High Chief Amajuoyi explained that the initiative was conceived shortly after the current administration assumed office nearly three years ago. He said the decision followed a policy direction aimed at ensuring the market truly reflects its international status.

He revealed that extensive consultations were held with founding fathers, former presidents, executive council members and other critical stakeholders before the ambitious remodelling project commenced.

Amajuoyi further recalled that government agencies had previously demolished about 32 structurally distressed plazas within the market. Following engagements with relevant authorities, approvals were secured to remodel the affected structures instead of embarking on complete reconstruction.

Despite the extensive facelift, the market president expressed concern over the deplorable condition of the access road leading to the market, describing it as a major challenge affecting business activities.

He appealed to the Lagos State Government and other relevant authorities to urgently rehabilitate the road, stressing that improved infrastructure would complement the market’s modern outlook, enhance safety, facilitate commerce and reinforce Alaba’s position as a truly international trading destination.

Looking ahead, High Chief Amajuoyi announced that the market will officially showcase its transformation to the world on August 6 and 7, demonstrating that Alaba International Market now operates as a well-organised commercial hub that meets international standards.

He expressed confidence that the unveiling signals the beginning of a new chapter for the market and reaffirmed the leadership’s commitment to sustaining reforms that will promote trade, attract investment and consolidate Alaba International Market’s position as Africa’s leading electronics marketplace.
