The popular Alaba International Market, along the Lagos Badagy Expressway, has been sealed up due to environmental offences.
This was disclosed by the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Lagos State, Tokunbo Wahab on X.
The sealing of the market took place on Monday, October 23, 2023.
According to the Commissioner, the reason for the closure of the market was due to poor waste disposal practices, failure to pay their waste bills and gross environmental sanitation offences.
Alaba International Market is the latest to be closed down due to environmental issues.
In the past few weeks, the Lagos State government has shut down markets for various environmental offences.
The markets have since been re-opened after thorough assessments were carried out.
Among the markets closed down are Ladipo Market, Agbado Oke-Odo Market, Oyingbo Market, Alayabiagba Market, Alamutu (Ologede) Market and sections of Tejuosho Market.
The Managing Director of Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA), Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the authority’s decision to shut down the markets was arrived at after several warnings about their non-compliance with the state’s Environmental Protection Laws.
Gbadegesin stated that despite LAWMA’s several measures to improve the environment, some individuals and markets undermined their efforts by refusing to abide by the laws and regulations.
