Akingboye’s First Son Raises Alarm Over ‘Suspicious Circumstances’ Surrounding Father’s Death

Lagos — Nine weeks after the death of prominent businessman and 2023 Ondo State SDP governorship candidate, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA), his first son, Samuel Akingboye, has raised fresh concerns over what he describes as “disturbing and suspicious circumstances” surrounding the incident and subsequent police handling of the case.

In a detailed press statement released on Friday, Samuel—who identified himself as the first son and eldest child of the late politician—outlined a chronology of events which he believes suggest foul play, calling for urgent intervention by the Inspector General of Police and other authorities.

“Circumstances of My Father’s Death Remain Unclear”

Samuel said he received news of his father’s death on September 3, 2025, through his security aide, who informed him that the information originated from his stepbrother. He stated that upon arriving at the hospital, physical injuries observed on the late Akingboye “contradicted” accounts given by members of the household.

According to him, attempts to obtain clarification from his stepmother and stepbrothers produced “inconsistent” explanations.

Concerns Over Financial Transactions and Property

Samuel further alleged that within hours of his father’s passing, large sums of money were moved from company accounts linked to the deceased to accounts associated with his stepmother and her son. He also claimed that valuables—including documents, cash and personal items—were removed from his father’s VGC residence and office.

He said these developments prompted him to insist on an autopsy, which family members eventually agreed to.

Police Investigation and “Resistance” at Family Residence

The statement alleges that police officers, during initial attempts to access the VGC residence for investigation, were “resisted and denied entry” by members of the household. Officers eventually gained access the following day, after which the case was escalated from the Ajah Division to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti.

Samuel said homicide detectives retrieved CCTV footage from a neighbouring building and conducted forensic examinations. He claimed that the footage obtained “contradicted earlier accounts” provided by individuals present at the residence.

Autopsy Delays and Case Transfer

According to Samuel, the autopsy—witnessed by representatives of both sides—was concluded weeks ago, but the Lagos Commissioner of Police allegedly withheld the findings from him despite his role as complainant.

He further expressed concern over what he described as “repeated reassignment” of the case, including a recent transfer from SCID to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Surulere, a move he called “illogical and troubling.”

He also alleged that the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has requested the case file since October without receiving a response from the police.

Claims of Threats and Asset Interference

Samuel stated that he has received “direct and indirect death threats” from parties he accuses of obstructing the investigation. He also warned that efforts are allegedly underway by “interested parties” to access or transfer his late father’s assets and documents while the investigation remains unresolved.

He cautioned the public against engaging in any transactions involving Akingboye’s properties, insisting that the family has a full inventory and will act appropriately once investigations conclude and burial arrangements are made.

Calls for Intervention

Samuel appealed to Nigerians, civil society groups, and legal and human rights organisations to support efforts to uncover the truth. He specifically urged Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to intervene, describing his late father as “one of the state’s illustrious sons.”

He also called on the Inspector General of Police to take direct oversight of the case, and demanded the immediate release of the autopsy report, CCTV evidence, and compliance with the DPP’s requests.

“My Father Deserves Justice”

Concluding the statement, Samuel said his intervention was not driven by malice but by grief and a quest for accountability.

> “My father was a patriot, a provider and a voice for many. He deserves justice; our family deserves truth; society deserves accountability,” he said.

“No matter how long it takes, I will stand firm until justice prevails.”
