The Legislative Arm of Agege Local Government has confirmed that it is awaiting the formal approval of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for Hon. AbdulGaniyu Vinod Obasa to assume office as the new Executive Chairman of the council, following the resignation of Hon. Tunde Azeez, popularly known as Disco.

Azeez, who recently stepped down from office due to health challenges, had earlier proceeded on medical leave to the United Kingdom before tendering his resignation letter to the council’s legislative arm.

Speaking on the development, the Leader of the House, Hon. Haruna Adeshina, disclosed that the lawmakers received and deliberated on Azeez’s resignation during plenary.

“We received a letter from the Chairman, Hon. Tunde Azeez, alias Disco. The Clerk of the House read the letter on the floor of the House,” Adeshina stated.

“Afterwards, we moved to confirm the Acting Chairman, Hon. AbdulGaniyu Vinod Obasa, as the substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government. We have since written to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, seeking his approval of the House resolution.”

Adeshina noted that Azeez had, about a month earlier, officially informed the council of his medical trip abroad, adding that the legislative process for succession was in line with constitutional provisions.

Hon. AbdulGaniyu Obasa, who is the Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government and son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has been overseeing council affairs in an acting capacity for about two months.

Political observers recall that Obasa was initially considered for the council chairmanship ahead of the forthcoming July 12, 2025 local government elections, with a political group, Agege Youth Vanguard, reportedly purchasing the ₦5 million nomination form on his behalf before his name was later dropped and he emerged as vice chairman.

Azeez’s tenure, though brief, was marked by health-related interruptions, which paved the way for AbdulGaniyu’s steady performance as Acting Chairman.

Reacting to the latest development, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Agege, Hon. Rotimi Sulaiman, praised Azeez for his courage and sense of responsibility.

“Hon. Tunde Azeez has been unwell for some time. His decision to resign and focus on his health instead of holding onto office is a wise and commendable one,” he said.

“The beneficiary of that decision, Hon. AbdulGaniyu Obasa, is a visionary young man who has shown uncommon leadership capacity in Azeez’s absence. Agege is fortunate to have both men.”

Meanwhile, Hon. Adeshina dismissed speculations suggesting Speaker Obasa’s influence in his son’s elevation.

“In life, no matter what you do, people will always have opinions — good or bad. But as lawmakers, we have acted within our constitutional powers. Health is wealth, and we cannot ignore a leader’s resignation due to health reasons,” he clarified.

Efforts to reach both Azeez and AbdulGaniyu Obasa for comments on the development proved unsuccessful at press time.
