AFCON 2023 Qualifiers: Super Eagles commence training ahead of Sunday’s clash with São Tomé

Ahead of Sunday final 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match against São Tomé and Príncipe, twenty-three Super Eagles under the supervision of Jose Peseiro held their first training session on Wednesday evening.

Head Coach Peseiro taking full charge, the team engaged in key drilling sessions, where they did several fitness routines at the training pitch of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, as the Eagles seek a 20th appearance at Africa’s flagship tournament holding January next year in Cote d’Ivoire.

The Super Eagles who alongside Guinea-Bissau, have already secured qualification to next year’s AFCON from Group A, will continue their training exercise on Thursday.

Despite their guaranteed spot at the biggest African showpiece, the Portuguese tactician invited a very strong squad for the game against the Selecao.

23 players were called up for the game against São Tomé with the trio of Victor Boniface, Gift Orban and Jordan Torunarigha getting their first invite while Tyronne Ebuehi and Jamilu Collins returned to the team.

The likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon, Wilfred Ndidi, William Troost-Ekong and Samuel Chukwueze were also invited

The Eagles players arrived at the Akwa Ibom State capital via the Victor Attah International Airport. They were received by the State FA Normalization Committee and taken to their hotel, Four Points by Sheraton.

Earlier on Tuesday, team coach Peseiro arrived in Uyo with three of his assistants and assessed the playing condition of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, where the match will take place.

The team will hold its first training session today by 5 p.m. at the training pitch of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football has named Algerian official Lahlou Benbraham as the referee for Sunday’s clash.
