The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over what it described as a “disgraceful and toxic” message issued to mark the birthday of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement released on Monday, the APC condemned the tone of the ADC’s message, accusing the opposition party of abandoning civility in favour of bitterness and political hostility. The ruling party said such conduct reflects a deeper crisis within the ADC, characterising it as disorganised, frustrated, and struggling with relevance.
The APC stressed that moments of national significance should be approached with decorum, noting that political differences should not override basic standards of respect and decency.
Drawing a comparison, the party referenced the response of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to the personal loss of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, during his legal proceedings. It described that moment as an example of empathy and institutional maturity, where civility was maintained despite ongoing processes.
According to the APC, the ADC’s actions stand in sharp contrast, portraying a party that has, in its view, lost direction and restraint. It added that when opposition politics descends into what it termed “recklessness,” it undermines the credibility and seriousness required in democratic engagement.
The statement further noted that Nigerians deserve a responsible opposition capable of offering constructive ideas and viable alternatives, rather than resorting to inflammatory rhetoric.
The APC advised the ADC to focus on internal organisation and rebuilding its structure if it hopes to regain public confidence.
Reaffirming its position, the Lagos APC said it remains committed to disciplined governance and delivering on its mandate, while urging political actors to elevate the standard of public discourse.
The statement was signed by Mogaji (Hon.) Seye Oladejo, Lagos APC Spokesman.
