The growing fractures within Nigeria’s opposition bloc widened yesterday as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) publicly called on former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to “make up his mind” on his 2027 ambition.
The party simultaneously announced that zoning would not feature in its pre-election considerations—an indication of deeper internal disagreements.
Political observers say the development underscores what they describe as ideological drift and a lack of strategic coherence within sections of the opposition. What should ordinarily be structured coalition-building has instead morphed into open confrontations and conflicting declarations.
A Coalition Under Strain
Analysts note that the ADC’s shifting posture—rejecting zoning today while issuing ultimatums tomorrow—reflects persistent uncertainty within the coalition it is part of. Critics argue that the party’s internal contradictions, unclear direction and inconsistent messaging raise questions about its readiness to provide a credible national alternative.
There are also growing perceptions that the coalition may have been built around predetermined interests long before consultations began, with other political actors allegedly brought in later merely to broaden the structure on paper.
Obi’s Strategic Positioning Under Scrutiny
At the centre of the storm is Mr. Obi, whose political manoeuvring continues to attract scrutiny. Commentators argue that his cautious, wait-and-see approach mirrors his 2023 trajectory, raising the possibility that he may again be awaiting a convenient platform rather than engaging in structured political groundwork.
APC Says Opposition “Creating Distractions”
Reacting to the development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) cautioned opposition parties against distracting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with “manufactured drama” at a time the administration is focused on economic stabilization, security reforms, infrastructure expansion and other national priorities.
According to the APC, the ruling party has no need to begin electioneering ahead of schedule, insisting that ongoing governance achievements will speak for themselves.
The party dismissed the renewed opposition disagreements as evidence of “lack of preparation and internal coherence,” adding that Nigerians are now more discerning about political promises and performance.
“2027 Is for Prepared Leadership”
The Lagos APC Spokesperson, Hon. Seye Oladejo, in a statement, said the unfolding ADC–Obi controversy illustrates the wider instability within the opposition camp. He argued that while opposition parties are engaged in internal disputes, the APC remains focused on governance and national development.
He emphasized that the 2027 general elections would reward readiness, structure and clarity—not what he described as political experiments or disjointed coalitions.
