Nigeria’s Genesis Miesinnei Mercy has defeated Canada’s Parks Madison to clinch the gold medal in women’s wrestling at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG).

Mercy won the encounter 9-0 at the Coventry Arena on Saturday evening.

The Nigerian had a 3-1 VFA (victory by fall) to easily win Parks.

Mercy’s gold is Nigeria’s ninth of the tournament so far.

Blessing Oborududu and Odunayo Adekuroye had earlier clinched gold medals for Nigeria in women’s wrestling.

In the men’s freestyle 57kg final, Welson Ebikewenimo claimed the silver medal after losing to Ravi Kumar of India.

John Ogbonna Emmanuel also won the bronze medal in the men’s 75kg freestyle category.

He defeated Bowling Charlie of England 10-0.

Faith Obazuaye also defeated Pickard Felicity of England to the bronze medal in the women’s singles classes table tennis at the NEC 3 hall.

Her medal is the first from table tennis for Nigeria.

Nigeria has now won 26 medals — 9 gold, 6 silver and 11 bronze.
