Fire outbreak in LASTMA yard guts 11 impounded vehicles

The fire outbreak that gutted the yard of Lagos State Transport Management Agency (LASTMA) located at Osodi, have been reported to have razed eleven impounded vehicles.

The Lagos State Emergency Agency’s (LASEMA) spokesperson, Nosa Okunbor, confirmed this to journalists.

The cause of the fire is unknown as of the time of filling this report.

He said, “LASEMA is in an ongoing operation at the LASTMA yard Oshodi curtailing a fire outbreak. The cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be ascertained.

“Information gathered by LRT on arrival at the scene revealed that the fire started from the compound where impounded vehicles were kept.

“A total number of ten cars and one trailer was razed by the inferno.

“No casualties recorded at the scene as the LRT, LRU Fire and LASG Fire are all responders.

“The fire has been successfully put out by joint responders, dampening down is presently ongoing.”

However in an update message posted on LASEMA Facebook wall by the General Manager of the state agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu stated that “unfortunately, another distress call was put accross to the Team earlier this morning Saturday 15th August 2020 at about 6:55 am informing of another Re- ignition from the same spot”.

Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu noted that the team and other responders with the Agency’s Hiab and Super Metro evacuated some of the abandoned vehicles and also cleared up some of the vulnerable spot which can lead to another re- ignition of the fire.

The course of the incident was attibuted to the decomposition of combustible refuse within the compound.

The Director of Operations LASTMA, Mr. Oreagba was on ground to monitor the whole proceedings.

The vulnerable spots were cleared, abandoned vehicles were repositioned to prevent re-ignition of the fire.
