ZENITH BANK INTRODUCES GOOGLE PAY FOR FASTER, MORE SECURE DIGITAL PAYMENTS

Customers can now make contactless in-store payments and complete online transactions using eligible Zenith Bank cards linked to Google Wallet.

Zenith Bank Plc has announced the introduction of Google Pay for its customers, expanding its digital payment offerings and providing a faster, more convenient and secure way to make everyday transactions.

The new service allows eligible cardholders to add their supported Zenith Bank cards to Google Wallet and use compatible smartphones to make contactless payments at participating point-of-sale terminals, as well as complete purchases on supported websites and mobile applications without repeatedly entering their card details.

The development reflects the bank’s continued investment in technology-driven banking solutions as more Nigerians embrace digital platforms for shopping, bill payments and other financial transactions.

Enhanced security and convenience

Google Pay uses payment tokenisation technology, which replaces a customer’s actual card number with a digital token during transactions, helping to safeguard sensitive payment information.

According to the bank, the service offers several benefits, including enhanced protection of card details, faster checkout, convenient payments across supported platforms and improved confidence when conducting digital transactions.

Customers can simply tap their compatible devices at participating contactless payment terminals or select Google Pay at supported online and in-app checkout points, subject to card eligibility, device compatibility and merchant acceptance.

Zenith Bank builds on legacy of innovation

The introduction of Google Pay builds on Zenith Bank’s history of adopting technology to improve customer experience and expand access to banking services.

In 2007, the bank opened what it described as Nigeria’s first ATM gallery, providing customers with access to cash without the need for traditional teller services. The facility also offered greater flexibility by allowing transactions on weekends and public holidays.

The bank said its latest digital payment initiative demonstrates its continued commitment to simplifying banking through innovation and customer-focused technology.

The Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc, Dame Dr Adaora Umeoji, OON, described the development as “digitally forward” and linked the bank’s technology ambitions to its forthcoming Zenith Bank Tech Fair 2026.

The event, themed “Future Forward 6.0,” is scheduled to hold on November 5, 2026, and is expected to further explore emerging technologies and their role in shaping the future of financial services.

How customers can activate Google Pay

Eligible Zenith Bank cardholders can get started by opening the Google Wallet application on a compatible device, selecting the option to add a payment card and completing the required verification process.

Once the card has been successfully added, customers can use the service at participating contactless terminals and supported online and in-app payment platforms.

Availability depends on the eligibility of the card, compatibility of the device and acceptance of Google Pay by the merchant.
