Group unveils new structure, seeks refund of outstanding nomination fees
The Lagos APC Grassroots Commanders have charted a new course for the group, with members agreeing to strengthen its structure, pursue outstanding nomination-fee refunds and mobilise resources for future programmes.
The decisions were reached at the group’s state meeting held at the APC Lagos Central Campaign Office, Lagos Island, on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
The meeting commenced at 3:45 p.m. with a motion moved by Hon. Kunle Gbotifa of Imota LCDA and seconded by Hon. Fatima Husein Omo Ologo of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA. The opening prayer was offered by Yeye Abiola Soaga of Ikorodu North LCDA.
In his opening remarks, the State Director-General, Otunba Shocas of Mushin Local Government, expressed appreciation to members for their attendance and called for total commitment, unity and loyalty to the group.
He subsequently requested members to introduce themselves, after which the State Secretary, Hon. Shola Opeyemi Taiwo of Ikorodu North LCDA, thanked members for his appointment.
Why the Group Was Renamed
Presenting his situation report and matters arising from an online meeting held the previous night, the Secretary explained why members needed to remain together even after achieving their initial objective of securing refunds.
He said the group had continued to engage relevant party authorities over the outstanding payment of nomination-form fees owed to some members.
He also explained the rationale behind the new name, Lagos APC Grassroots Commanders, stressing that members were no longer merely aspirants but had evolved into grassroots politicians and mobilisers.
The Secretary further proposed a ₦100,000 contribution from each member to support the group’s activities and projects. The proposal was adopted.
To demonstrate his commitment and kick-start the group’s programmes, the DG immediately made a ₦1 million donation.
He also stressed the need for the group to establish a stronger and more effective organisational structure.
Nomination Refund Still Top Priority
The DG reiterated that members must remain focused, particularly on the issue of outstanding nomination-fee refunds.
He disclosed that he recently engaged the APC Lagos State Chairman on the matter at an event, adding that the Chairman assured him that efforts were ongoing and that the outstanding payments would be made soon.
New Leadership Appointments
The meeting also witnessed the appointment of Barrister Abimbola as State Deputy Director-General, while another Deputy DG was appointed to oversee the Lagos Central Senatorial District.
Hon. Fatima Husein Omo Ologo called for the adoption of a slogan for the group, while Hon. Doyin Jokotex of Ikorodu North LCDA asked whether individuals who were not former aspirants could be considered for membership of the LGA executive committees.
Responding, the DG said such individuals could be considered after the interests and welfare of members who participated in the initial struggle had been adequately addressed.
Members Debate Funding, Branding
Hon. Elaloro of Itire-Ikate LCDA sought clarification on what the proposed contributions would be used for.
The DG explained that the group had several programmes ahead, noting that other support groups were already making preparations to launch their activities.
He listed proposed activities including the production of branded caps and banners, press conferences, inauguration ceremonies and rallies.
Hon. Ayo Onikoyi-Esho of Yaba LCDA commended the leadership style of the DG and urged members to work together as one family.
He pledged his full participation in the group’s activities and suggested that the branded caps should incorporate the green and white colours.
Other members made suggestions on the colour scheme, including lemon, green-on-white and other combinations.
Hon. Omo Ologo urged the leadership to consider the preferences of women when deciding on the final colour.
Hon. Shina of Mushin Local Government subsequently presented a cost-effective cap design for consideration. The design was circulated among members and eventually adopted.
Action Points
The meeting assigned the following responsibilities:
- The State Secretary is to work with the State Deputy DG to develop a comprehensive structure for the group.
- Hon. Shina is to obtain the cost of producing the adopted branded caps.
- Letters are to be written to the APC and selected party leaders to formally communicate the group’s new direction and intentions.
The meeting also welcomed Iyalode Kafayat of Lagos Mainland Local Government, who was introduced to members and pledged her loyalty to the group.
Hon. Atala sent an apology for his absence, explaining that his vehicle had developed a fault.
The meeting ended with a renewed call for unity, commitment and collective action as the Lagos APC Grassroots Commanders prepare to strengthen their presence and activities across the state.
