… As ICAN President, Members Pay Courtesy Visit To New Accountant-General
The Accountant-General of Lagos State, Dr. Muyiwa John Adetola, FCA, has reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to strengthening fiscal governance and deepening professional collaboration with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
He gave this assurance on Monday when the President of ICAN, Mallam Haruna Nma Yahaya, mni, PhD, FCA, led a delegation of the Institute on a courtesy visit to his office following his recent appointment as Lagos State Accountant-General and Permanent Secretary, State Treasury Office (STO).
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Muyiwa Adetola attributed the stability and resilience of Lagos State’s financial architecture to the competence and professionalism of ICAN-certified accountants serving within the Public Service.
He noted that the State has consistently maintained timely preparation and presentation of its financial statements in compliance with statutory requirements, describing this as a testament to the discipline and efficiency of its financial management system.
The Accountant-General emphasised the importance of transparency, accountability and adherence to global best practices in public financial management, stressing that these principles remain critical to sustaining the State’s economic growth and development.
He further assured that the Lagos State Government would continue to strengthen its financial systems and processes to ensure prudent management of public resources, while also fostering strategic partnerships with ICAN to enhance capacity building and institutional efficiency.
According to him, sustained collaboration with ICAN will further promote professionalism, ethical standards and continuous training for accounting personnel within the State’s Public Service.
Earlier, the ICAN President, Mallam Haruna Nma Yahaya, congratulated the Accountant-General on his appointment, describing Lagos State as a pacesetter in financial management and governance in Nigeria.
He reiterated the Institute’s readiness to support the State Government through professional advisory services, training and capacity development initiatives, while also reaffirming ICAN’s commitment to upholding integrity, competence and accountability within the accounting profession.
Yahaya noted that the visit underscores the importance attached to the Office of the Lagos State Accountant-General, as well as the confidence reposed in the leadership of Dr. Muyiwa John Adetola.
He commended the Accountant-General for his outstanding track record, particularly his tenure as Auditor-General of Lagos State, which earned him widespread respect within the accounting profession and among public institutions.
The ICAN President described Dr. Adetola’s appointment as not only a professional milestone but also a recognition of his decades of dedication, integrity and commitment to fiscal responsibility.
He added that the strength of Lagos State’s financial governance framework continues to set benchmarks for other states and institutions across the country.
As part of efforts to deepen collaboration, Yahaya proposed several initiatives, including the introduction of the ICAN Accountability Index (ICAN-A), a professional tool designed to promote best practices in Public Financial Management (PFM) across government institutions.
He also proposed a structured capacity-building partnership aimed at enhancing the technical expertise of Lagos State finance officers through specialised training programmes focused on emerging global standards in public sector accounting, financial reporting and fiscal governance.
