Governance Transcends Emotion – Lagos APC Defends Presidential Assent to Electoral Act 2026

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has expressed strong disappointment over what it described as orchestrated hysteria by sections of the opposition following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assent to the Electoral Act 2026.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has expressed strong disappointment over what it described as orchestrated hysteria by sections of the opposition following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assent to the Electoral Act 2026.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party maintained that governance is a constitutional responsibility guided by national interest, not a popularity contest driven by social media narratives.

The Lagos APC dismissed opposition claims surrounding the non-adoption of what they termed “real-time transmission” models, arguing that experiences in several democracies have revealed technological glitches, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, legal ambiguities, and judicial disputes associated with such systems. According to the party, electoral reforms must prioritize systemic integrity over political convenience.

The statement further rejected suggestions that electoral reform is the exclusive preserve of the opposition, insisting that reforms must be anchored on legality, sustainability, and institutional credibility rather than political opportunism.

Defending the President’s decision, the APC noted that the assent followed due constitutional process, legislative debate, and institutional consultation. It described the move as an act of prudence and careful statecraft rather than a reaction to public pressure.

The party cautioned against attempts to inflame public sentiment, stressing that electoral integrity must be built on durable and legally defensible frameworks. It warned that fragile or poorly implemented systems could undermine public confidence rather than strengthen it.

Reaffirming its support for the President’s action, the Lagos APC stated that while opposition remains vital in a democracy, it must be constructive and not rooted in distortion.

“Governance transcends emotion. It demands maturity over melodrama, substance over spectacle, and nation over narrative,” the statement concluded.

The statement was signed by Mogaji (Hon.) Seye Oladejo, Lagos APC Spokesman, and dated February 19, 2026.
