INEC Denies Releasing Timetable for 2027 General Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports suggesting that it has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election, describing such claims as false and misleading.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports suggesting that it has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election, describing such claims as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Commission clarified that no timetable or schedule has been approved or made public for the 2027 polls, contrary to information circulating in some quarters.

INEC stressed that it conducts its activities strictly in accordance with the law, drawing attention to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates the Commission to publish a Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the date appointed for a general election. It noted that any timetable purportedly released outside this legal framework could not have originated from the Commission.

The electoral body assured Nigerians that the official Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election would be released in due course and in full compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022. INEC added that such information would be communicated exclusively through its verified and established channels.

The Commission urged members of the public and the media to disregard the fake reports and to rely only on INEC’s official platforms for accurate and authoritative information.

The statement was signed by Mr Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, and dated January 2, 2026.
