LAGOS — Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has empowered 1,000 residents across Lagos State with financial assistance totalling ₦460 million under the Eko Cares initiative — a social welfare programme designed to uplift vulnerable individuals and small-scale entrepreneurs.

The disbursement ceremony, held on Wednesday at Agidingbi, Ikeja, was organised by the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement. Beneficiaries received cheques ranging from ₦300,000 to ₦1.5 million, depending on their specific needs — including business support, medical bills, school fees, house rent, and aid for persons with disabilities.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the initiative as a reflection of the government’s enduring commitment to compassion and inclusion.

“This presentation of cheques to over 1,000 vulnerable Lagosians is not just a ceremony; it is a celebration of compassion and shared humanity,” he said. “Progress is not solely about infrastructure or statistics — it is about how deeply we care for one another.”

He noted that Eko Cares reaffirms the essence of good governance — to provide comfort, hope, and opportunity — particularly to those who need them the most.

Governor Sanwo-Olu commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative, saying it aligns with Lagos State’s social investment drive to empower citizens and build a more inclusive society.

“This initiative is making a real difference in the lives of thousands across the state. It helps residents tackle economic challenges, fosters stability, and restores dignity,” he said.

Highlighting the government’s ongoing social support programmes, Sanwo-Olu disclosed that:

In 2024, ₦1.1 billion was disbursed to 2,477 residents across the state.

For 2025, another ₦1.6 billion has been earmarked to assist an additional 2,850 beneficiaries, with many already benefiting from the ongoing process.

He urged beneficiaries to see the support as a “seed of hope” rather than mere financial aid.

“Let it ignite your next breakthrough, strengthen your business, or bring peace to your home. The government can open doors, but it is your determination that keeps them open,” he advised.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr. Afolabi Tajudeen, said the initiative embodies the Sanwo-Olu administration’s philosophy of equity and empathy.

“Since its inception in 2020, the Eko Listens Financial Assistance Programme has become a beacon of hope for thousands of Lagosians,” he said. “It demonstrates a government that listens with intent, responds with compassion, and acts with purpose.”

Dr. Afolabi also highlighted other people-centred initiatives of his office, including the Civic Education and Sensitisation Programme in schools and the Citizens Gate Mobile App, both aimed at strengthening citizen engagement and government responsiveness.

Some beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Lagos State Government for the timely intervention, pledging to invest the funds wisely and productively.

Launched in 2020, Eko Cares continues to serve as one of Lagos State’s flagship social empowerment programmes, providing financial assistance to residents for healthcare, education, housing, and business support — reaffirming Governor Sanwo-Olu’s vision of a Greater Lagos that leaves no one behind.
