Tottenham stun Guardiola’s Manchester City with 2–0 win at Etihad

Manchester City’s first home game of the 2025/26 Premier League season ended in disappointment as Pep Guardiola’s side fell 2–0 to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

First-half goals from Brennan Johnson and João Palhinha sealed the victory for Spurs, who handed City their first defeat of the campaign just a week after their emphatic opening triumph at Wolves.

The result leaves Guardiola’s men facing an early setback in their title defence, while Thomas Frank’s Tottenham signalled real intent with a disciplined performance that frustrated City throughout.

A costly mix-up between Ric Lewis and debutant goalkeeper James Trafford gifted Spurs their second goal in dramatic fashion.

Despite enjoying close to 60 percent possession, City struggled to carve out clear chances against a well-drilled Tottenham side that stayed compact, absorbed pressure, and struck clinically when opportunities arose.

A post-match report on the Spurs website read: “City are beaten 2-0 by Tottenham in our opening home game of the 2025/26 campaign.

“Looking to build momentum after a wonderful win against Wolves at Molineux, there were no home comforts for Pep Guardiola’s men as first half goals from Brennan Johnson and João Palhinha did the damage at the Etihad.”

Under new manager Thomas Frank, Spurs maintained composure and tactical discipline, disrupting City’s rhythm and capitalising on defensive errors.

Their approach earned praise for both defensive organisation and sharp execution in attack.

The victory means Tottenham have opened the season with back-to-back wins, climbing to the top of the Premier League table.

For City, it was a sobering reminder of the challenges ahead in their bid to defend the title, and their first home defeat of the season—coming only a week after their dominant 4–0 win at Wolves.
