Lagos man Odunaya remanded for assaulting wife in property ownership row

Operatives of Zone 2 Command, Lagos, have arrested a 55-year-old man, Gbenga Odunaya, for allegedly assaulting his wife, Muibat Laminat, and inflicting injuries on her during a dispute over property documents.

According to police reports, Laminat claimed that her late father willed property to her, which she sold for N11 million.

She deposited the money into her husband’s account, using part of it to build a house while her husband purchased vehicles with the remainder.

Trouble reportedly began after the couple separated, and Laminat demanded the documents for the house she financed.

Instead of complying, Odunaya allegedly attacked her, leaving her with injuries.

The case was reported to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Adegoke Fayoade, who ordered Odunaya’s arrest.Odunaya was charged before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court sitting at Tinubu, Lagos Island, on two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

Police Prosecutor ASP Jimoh Joseph told the court that the offences, committed in 2020 at Noforija, Epe, Lagos, violate Sections 173 and 168(4) of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.

The charge reads: “That you, Gbenga Odunaya, in 2020 at Noforija area of Epe, Lagos, did assault Muibat Laminat, inflicting injuries on her.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty. Magistrate Adetunji granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He was remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Facility until the bail conditions are met.

The case was adjourned to 15 January 2025 for mention.
