The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake has reaffirmed the significance of host communities and traditional rulers to the conducive environment required for socio-economic development of host communities.

Dr. Alake stated this while playing host to Attah of Igala and President of Kogi State Traditional Rulers Council, HRH Ata Matthew Opaluwa, who   paid him a courtesy visit in the office recently. Stressing the need for host communities to take ownership of mining activities and collaborate with government to ensure efficient mining operations, Alake restated the commitment of the Federal Government to protect rights of communities and ensure their rights.

” Whatever we can do to ensure a peaceful, operating environment, we will do. We also need the cooperation of locals in partnering with government to ensure better security. If we have peace around mining operations, we will be able to attract more investments in the mining sector. The government, on its part, is rejigging the security architecture to address contemporary security challenges beseting the sector and also factoring royalties for communities into every mining operation,” he added.

The Ata of Igala in his remarks commended the Minister for his efforts, thus far, in repositioning the mining sector, noting however, that unlicensed miners and those operating without requisite agreement with host communities remains an albatross, posing security challenges to locals. He sought the intervention of the Minister in addressing this whilst also advocating for prominent roles for host communities paramount rulers to protect the interests of the people.

Dr. Alake, while responding, assured HRH Opaluwa that the Ministry’s Mines Inspectorate would be strengthened to ascertain authenticity of mining agreements, promising inclusion of Traditional Rulers in signing agreement on behalf of host communities.

To ensure the payment of due royalties and protection of community rights, the Minister revealed that plans are underway to reposition the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) for optimum efficiency.

Big trouble looms for randy lecturers as Senate takes bold step

Under the new law, offenders found guilty of offences outlined in Clauses 4 (1), (2), and (3) face a jail term of not less than five years and up to fourteen years, without an option of a fine. Lesser offences specified under Clauses 4 (4), (5), and (6) attract imprisonment of between two and five years, also without the possibility of a fine. The bill also empowers victims to pursue civil action for breach of fiduciary duty, using the same standard of proof as in civil proceedings. It lists several prohibited acts, including demanding sexual favours, making unwelcome advances, engaging in unwanted physical contact, or inducing others to commit harassment. During deliberations, Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) urged lawmakers to consider expanding the bill’s coverage to include the workplace and other professional settings, arguing that sexual harassment is not confined to educational institutions. “There is no reason to restrict this legislation to students alone,” Oshiomhole said. “We should design a law with broader application that protects every Nigerian from harassment.” However, Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, who presided over the session, clarified that the bill, already passed by the House of Representatives, was limited to concurrence and that existing statutes already address sexual harassment in workplace contexts. Following the debate, the Senate unanimously adopted and passed the bill for third reading, marking a major victory for advocates of students’ rights and gender protection in Nigeria’s education system.
