A 55-year-old motorist has escaped unhurt after a moving train collided with his Honda car at the PWD railway crossing in Lagos, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged and causing traffic congestion in the area.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, stating that the train was travelling towards Agege when it struck the Honda car with registration number EKY 902 JT.
In a statement issued on Friday and signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA described the vehicle as virtually a complete write-off following the collision.
“Notwithstanding the severity of the impact and the considerable destruction sustained by the vehicle, the motorist miraculously escaped without any reported injury, with no casualty recorded at the scene,” the statement said.
An earlier traffic update released at 7:20 a.m. indicated that onlookers had pushed the damaged vehicle off the railway tracks, while LASTMA operatives managed traffic and emergency responders attended to the scene.
According to the agency, its personnel, working alongside security operatives, rescued the driver and facilitated the removal of the wrecked vehicle from the tracks.
LASTMA said their prompt and coordinated intervention enabled the obstruction to be cleared, allowing the train to continue its journey towards Agege.
However, traffic congestion persisted around the PWD axis even after the railway tracks had been cleared.
“Despite the successful removal of the wrecked automobile from the railway track, vehicular movement around the PWD axis remains severely impeded,” the statement added.
The damaged Honda was subsequently handed over to security personnel for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the personnel involved for their coordinated response, emphasising the importance of prompt intervention and cooperation during transport emergencies.
He also urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when approaching railway crossings, warning them against attempting to cross the tracks when a train is approaching or already in motion.
“The Authority maintains that the preservation of human life must remain paramount in all road-use decisions,” the statement noted.
LASTMA consequently appealed to motorists and other road users to comply strictly with traffic and railway safety regulations to prevent avoidable accidents and protect lives and property.
