Lagos, August 8, 2026 — Thirty suspected miscreants have been convicted and sentenced to two months’ imprisonment each after pleading guilty to charges bordering on the vandalism and removal of iron rods supporting critical bridges in Lagos State.
The convicts were arraigned on Friday before a Mobile Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, where they pleaded guilty to the offences and were subsequently sentenced to two months in prison each.
They were accused of vandalising and removing iron rods supporting the Festac-Alakija Bridge, Trade Fair, Orile and Abule-Ado bridges, raising concerns over the safety and integrity of critical public infrastructure across the state.
The development followed the directive by Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for vandalising the Festac-Alakija Bridge.
Governor Sanwo-Olu condemned the act, describing vandalism of public infrastructure as “barbaric and criminal.”
He said officials of the Office of Infrastructure who inspected the bridge had confirmed that its structural integrity remained intact, while remedial works would be carried out immediately to further protect the bridge columns.
“Lagos will not tolerate any act of vandalism because it is barbaric and criminal,” the Governor said.
He further warned that anyone found culpable in the incident would face the full weight of the law.
“Lagos has no place for such barbarism and acts of violence against our critical infrastructure and other facilities,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The Governor also urged Lagosians to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around public infrastructure to the relevant authorities.
