The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed deep concern over what it described as the “deteriorating state of opposition politics” in Nigeria as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s spokesperson, Hon. Seye Oladejo, the APC noted that rather than functioning as credible watchdogs or constructive critics, opposition parties have degenerated into what it called “a coalition of desperation, confusion, and hypocrisy.”

“The health of any democracy is measured by the quality and seriousness of its opposition — its ideas, organization, and consistency. Sadly, Nigeria’s opposition has failed woefully on all counts,” the statement read.

According to the Lagos APC, the current opposition lacks leadership, unity, and a coherent political philosophy. The party accused opposition figures of “abandoning ideology for opportunism,” noting that those who once claimed to stand for integrity now jump from one platform to another in pursuit of personal ambition.

The statement contrasted this “chaotic and rudderless” opposition with the purposeful and disciplined opposition years led by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as a “visionary strategist” who built a strong progressive movement anchored on principles, ideas, and structure.

“Asiwaju’s opposition politics was defined by clarity of purpose, ideological direction, and consistency. It was this brand of issue-driven politics that birthed the APC — a coalition of discipline, intellect, and patriotism — which Nigerians overwhelmingly voted into power in 2015,” the statement added.

While acknowledging the challenges of governance, the Lagos APC said President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda continues to steer the country toward economic recovery, stability, and national pride. It accused the opposition, however, of focusing solely on propaganda and divisive rhetoric instead of offering credible policy alternatives.

The party lamented that none of the opposition parties has presented a coherent roadmap for the economy, security, or education, adding that their only strategy has been to criticize government policies without offering solutions.

“An unserious and visionless opposition can only undermine democratic progress by reducing public discourse to mere noise and confusion,” Oladejo said.

He further noted that the absence of credible alternatives has contributed to rising voter apathy across the country, warning that Nigerians are losing faith in an opposition that fails to inspire hope or confidence.

“Democracy thrives not just on elections but on quality engagement between the ruling party and a constructive opposition. Unfortunately, what we have today is a fragmented collection of self-styled messiahs mistaking social media noise for political relevance,” he stated.

The Lagos APC therefore urged Nigerians to see through what it described as the “facade” of a disorganized opposition, asserting that the 2027 elections will not be a contest between the APC and a viable alternative, but a referendum on performance, vision, and national stability.

“On all these fronts, the APC stands head and shoulders above the rest,” Oladejo concluded.

He reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to building a prosperous, secure, and inclusive nation under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while calling on the opposition to “learn the basic art of leadership, discipline, and sincerity of purpose” if it truly wishes to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s democratic development.
