UNILAG shut down indefinitely as lecturers Protest salary cut

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced that it will begin an indefinite strike, bringing academic activities at the university to a halt.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced that it will begin an indefinite strike, bringing academic activities at the university to a halt.

According to the union, the decision to embark on industrial action comes after lecturers received what they called “amputated” salaries for the months of January and February 2026. The union described the pay cuts as unacceptable and urged the university management to take immediate action to resolve the issue.

The announcement was made in an official communique signed by Idou Kehinde, the ASUU UNILAG chairperson, and Adesina Arikawe, the union’s secretary, following an emergency meeting held on Tuesday. The statement emphasized that the strike will remain in effect until the university management meets the demands of the staff.

ASUU has consistently raised concerns over staff welfare and delayed payments in several Nigerian universities, warning that unresolved salary disputes can affect the quality of education and disrupt academic calendars.

The union called on the university authorities to engage in urgent dialogue to prevent prolonged disruption of lectures and examinations.

Students, parents, and stakeholders have been advised to stay updated on further developments as the situation unfolds, while the union awaits a response from the university management.
