Three persons have reportedly died in a collapsed four-storey building located at Freeman Road, on Lagos Island on Saturday.

It was learnt that the building was under construction before the collapse and had been captured by the LASBCA District Office for demolition.

According to eyewitnesses report the incident occurred in the afternoon during the downpour, with two persons dead, while three others were rescued, with some construction workers trapped.

The first body was pulled out of the rubble at about 4.50pm, while the second was pulled out two hours later, even as a crowd of sympathisers besieged the scene. 

The Coordinator,  National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Lagos State Territorial District, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the incident. 

In an update message received by Lagos Panorama signed and forwarded by the Permanent Secretary Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that 3 dead bodies were recovered from the wreckage, while five persons were rescued alive.

Oke-Osanyintolu message read “Situation Report on Collapsed 4 Floor Building at 4 Alayaki Lane, Lagos Island on Saturday, 21st May, 2022”.

“The Agency responded to the above incident which was already in violation of building safety protocols. It was discovered that the building had been captured by the LASBCA District Office and served with all Statutory Notices, Sealed at District and Central Enforcement Level”.

“Further investigation determined that the developer had continued clandestine operations mostly at night and at the weekends” the PS asserted.

The Saturday incident occurred barely two weeks after a three-storey building collapsed at Ibadan Street, Ebute-Meta, Lagos.
