The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Projects, SERAP, reacting to President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive has rejected the conditional lifting of the ban on Twitter.
Buhari on Friday announced that he had directed a conditional lifting of the ban placed on Twitter.
The president had disclosed this in his nationwide broadcast to Nigerians to mark the nation’s 61st independence.
He directed that the suspension of Twitter be lifted, only if the conditions by the presidential committee are met.
However, SERAP in a tweet urged the president to immediately and unconditionally lift the suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria.
The body stated that such measure would allow Nigerians to exercise their right to freedom of expression.
The tweet read, “BREAKING: We reject ‘conditional’ lifting of ban on Twitter in Nigeria by the Buhari administration.
“President Buhari must immediately and unconditionally lift the illegal suspension of Twitter, and allow Nigerians to freely exercise their right to freedom of expression.”
