IKEJA, LAGOS — The Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), has announced a joint mass sensitisation campaign with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to curb the dangerous practice of loading and dropping passengers on the Ikeja-Along/Computer Village connecting bridge.
The campaign will also sensitise pedestrians on the dangers of walking along the bridge and encourage them to use the designated pedestrian bridge for their safety.
AKOD disclosed this when chairmen of NURTW park garages across parts of Ikeja, led by the Lagos State leadership of the union, Comrade Mustafa Adekunle Seigo, paid him a visit at his office and presented thousands of safety fliers for distribution across the local government.
The fliers carry prominent safety messages, including: “STOP LOADING & DROPPING PASSENGERS ON THE BRIDGE!” and “DO NOT TREK ON THE BRIDGE! Your life is precious. Use the pedestrian bridge.”
The Ikeja council chairman described the initiative as apt, timely and imperative, stressing that his administration would continue to prioritise the protection of lives, smooth traffic flow and responsible use of public infrastructure.
He disclosed that members of the council’s executive would join the NURTW leadership next week for a coordinated sensitisation exercise at strategic locations across Ikeja.
AKOD further warned that motorists and pedestrians who violate the safety directives would be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law. He urged transport operators, commuters and residents to cooperate fully with the initiative in the collective interest of public safety.
The Chairman was accompanied during the engagement by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Abisola Omisore; Supervisor for Youth and Sports, Hon. Ayo Adenuga; and other council officials.
The initiative underscores the commitment of the Ikeja Local Government administration and transport stakeholders to reducing avoidable accidents, improving mobility and ensuring safer use of public infrastructure.
