The Lagos State University (LASU) has condemned the assault of one of its students at a privately owned hostel outside the university premises and commenced disciplinary proceedings against those allegedly involved.
The university disclosed this in a statement issued in Lagos on Friday and signed by Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations.
Thomas-Onashile said the incident involved students of the university’s College of Medicine, Ikeja, and occurred at a privately owned hostel located outside the university premises.
She said the affected student promptly reported the incident to the police, adding that the matter had since been addressed through the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
Despite the incident occurring off campus, she said the university management had initiated its own disciplinary process against the students involved in accordance with LASU’s rules and regulations.
“The university management unequivocally condemns this act of violence in the strongest terms,” she said.
Thomas-Onashile stressed that assault, intimidation and harassment involving students, staff or visitors were unacceptable, whether such incidents occurred within or outside the university premises.
She said such conduct was contrary to the core values upon which the institution was founded.
The university spokesperson also reminded students of the institution’s expectation that they should be “worthy in character and learning”, consistent with LASU’s mission of producing graduates who excel both academically and morally.
She urged students to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid circumstances that could expose them to danger or compromise their safety.
Thomas-Onashile further advised students to promptly report security concerns and other incidents to the appropriate authorities whenever necessary.
She also appealed to parents to support the university’s efforts to maintain discipline by engaging constructively with the institution and respecting established institutional boundaries.
Parents, she said, should encourage their wards to uphold discipline, integrity and responsible conduct.
The university reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the safety and well-being of its students while ensuring that they have a conducive environment for academic development.
“The university reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the well-being, safety and academic success of every student,” she said.
Thomas-Onashile added that LASU would continue to take measures to provide a secure and conducive learning environment for all students.
