EPE, LAGOS — August 28, 2026: The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Epe Branch, has urged lawyers to exercise restraint, civility and professionalism in their use of social media, warning that abusive or unprofessional online conduct could have serious professional and legal consequences.
The branch made the call in a statement issued by its Chairman, Alhaji Tansiru Ogunlaja, Esq., following a recent warning attributed to the President of the Nigerian Bar Association regarding possible sanctions against lawyers over abusive, offensive and unprofessional social media posts.
According to the Epe Branch, the development serves as a timely reminder that professional responsibility extends beyond the courtroom, law office and chambers to lawyers’ conduct in the digital space.
The branch acknowledged lawyers’ right to freedom of expression and robust criticism, particularly on matters of public interest, but stressed that such rights must be exercised with civility, restraint, decorum and respect for the dignity of the legal profession.
It therefore advised members to exercise caution in their communications and interactions across platforms including WhatsApp, Facebook, X, Instagram and TikTok.
The branch specifically urged lawyers to refrain from abusive, insulting or defamatory publications against colleagues, judicial officers, clients and members of the public; personal attacks disguised as professional criticism; reckless allegations capable of damaging the reputation of individuals or institutions; and the disclosure of confidential information concerning clients or pending matters.
Members were also cautioned against any online conduct capable of bringing the legal profession into disrepute, as well as unnecessary confrontations and prolonged exchanges on social media.
The branch noted that an impulsive post made in anger could create professional consequences capable of lasting for years.
It consequently urged lawyers to pause and consider the professional, ethical and legal implications of every publication before posting.
The NBA Epe Branch further advised members who have disagreements with colleagues or institutions to utilise appropriate professional, disciplinary and legal channels rather than resorting to abusive exchanges online.
The branch reaffirmed its commitment to promoting professionalism, discipline, mutual respect and the rule of law among members.
“We are lawyers first, and our conduct, online and offline, must reflect the dignity of the profession we represent,” the statement emphasised.
