The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, did not issue a “shoot-on-sight” order during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Makurdi, Benue State, contrary to widespread reports circulating on social media.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the Police explained that the IGP merely reminded officers that they had been thoroughly briefed on Force Order 237, which outlines the legal and operational framework governing the use of firearms by police personnel.
According to the statement, the IGP emphasized that officers understand the circumstances under which firearms may be lawfully deployed and are expected to act strictly in accordance with the established Rules of Engagement.
The Police further noted that the Inspector-General reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to tackling violent crimes, stressing that illegal possession of firearms and acts of unlawful killing would not be tolerated.
To address misconceptions surrounding the meeting, the Force urged members of the public to watch the full video of the Inspector-General’s remarks to appreciate the complete context of his statement.
The clarification was issued by the Force Headquarters in Abuja through the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu.
