Renowned Nollywood cinematographer and filmmaker, Tunde Kelani, has paid a heartfelt tribute to veteran actor, academic, and theatre icon, Professor Kola Oyewo, who passed away on Saturday.
In a farewell message sent to Lagos Panorama in the early hours of Sunday, Kelani expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the celebrated scholar and performer, describing him as a cultural ambassador, dedicated teacher, and cherished colleague.
Reflecting on their professional relationship, Kelani recalled working with Professor Oyewo on classic productions including Koseegbe, Oleku, and Saworoide, where the late actor delivered a memorable performance as Oba Lapite.
“His portrayal brought depth, dignity, and humanity to the role, making the character one of the film’s most enduring figures,” Kelani stated.
The veteran filmmaker also shared a personal reflection on the impact of Oyewo’s character in Saworoide, noting that the death of Oba Lapite in the storyline meant he could no longer feature the actor in the narrative.
“Once he was publicly executed by Lagata, I could not bring Kola Oyewo back into the narrative. I missed him then. Today, I miss him again,” he wrote.
Kelani praised the late professor for successfully bridging the worlds of scholarship and performance, inspiring generations of students, actors, and audiences through his talent, humility, and lifelong commitment to culture, theatre, and film.
He described Oyewo as a remarkable artist whose legacy would continue to live on through the stories he told and the countless lives he touched.
“Nigeria has lost a remarkable artist. Farewell, Professor Kola Oyewo. Farewell, Oba Lapite. Your legacy will endure in the stories you told and the lives you touched. Ire ni o,” Kelani concluded.
Professor Kola Oyewo was widely respected for his contributions to theatre, film, and academia, leaving behind a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s cultural landscape.
