Ojodu Council Chairman, Odunmbaku Signs PHC Compact, Backs Lagos Healthcare Revamp

The Chairman of Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Segun Odunmbaku, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening primary healthcare delivery in Lagos by supporting the state government’s initiative to reposition Primary Health Centres (PHCs) as the first point of care.

Odunmbaku joined other council chairmen to sign the Lagos State LGA Chairmen’s PHC Compact—an institutional pledge aimed at driving the revitalisation of PHCs across the state.

He made this known during a two-day strategic retreat held in Lagos on May 5 and 6 for chairmen of the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 LCDAs. The retreat, themed “Rebuilding the Foundation: A Strategic Retreat for Lagos State Local Government Area Chairmen on Primary Healthcare Revitalisation,” was organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board.

The initiative seeks to reform primary healthcare delivery, addressing the growing burden on secondary and tertiary hospitals caused by underutilised and underfunded PHCs. It also highlights the critical role of local government chairmen in implementing grassroots healthcare solutions.

Lagos currently operates about 340 PHCs for a population exceeding 22 million—far below global benchmarks, with comparisons drawn to countries like Malaysia, which has about 3,000 PHCs for 30 million people.

Speaking at the event, Odunmbaku stressed that properly funded and equipped PHCs would significantly reduce the pressure on higher-level hospitals by handling routine and less critical medical cases.

He commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for prioritising healthcare under the THEMES+ Agenda and the Lagos State Development Plan 2052.

Odunmbaku also welcomed the state’s 10-year strategic framework, which includes plans to construct 10 flagship, renewable energy-powered PHCs, rehabilitate existing centres, and introduce standardised designs for future facilities. The initiative will be financed through a partnership involving the state, local governments, and development institutions such as the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Highlighting efforts within Ojodu LCDA, Odunmbaku noted that his administration, under the HEYSRELOADED Agenda, has prioritised healthcare by constructing and upgrading PHCs in areas such as Oluwole, Akiode, Gbadamosi, and Powerline. These centres are equipped with modern facilities and have received commendations for their high standards.

He added that over 50 medical personnel have been recruited, while more than 600 minor surgical procedures have been successfully carried out at the upgraded facilities.

Reaffirming his commitment, Odunmbaku pledged to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of the state’s healthcare revitalisation initiative in Ojodu LCDA.

“At Ojodu LCDA, we fully support this revitalisation agenda. We recognise our constitutional responsibility for primary healthcare delivery and will work with all stakeholders to ensure its full implementation,” he said.
