Real Sociedad held their nerve in a dramatic shootout to defeat Atlético Madrid and secure a fourth Copa del Rey title, their first since 2020.

Twice Atletico battled back to force extra time, but it was Sociedad goalkeeper Unai Marrero who proved decisive, saving two penalties in a tense finale.

The Basque side made a blistering start, stunning Diego Simeone’s team with the fastest goal in Copa del Rey final history—Ander Barrenetxea heading home Gonçalo Guedes’ cross after just 14 seconds.

Ademola Lookman responded swiftly for Atletico, leveling with a composed finish in the 18th minute. But Sociedad regained the lead before halftime, as Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the spot after Juan Musso fouled Guedes.

Atletico dominated much of the second half and were rewarded when Julián Álvarez unleashed a stunning long-range strike into the top corner to make it 2-2.

With neither side able to find a winner in extra time, the final went to penalties, where Sociedad kept their composure. Pablo Marín sealed the victory in style, smashing the decisive kick into the roof of the net.

For Atletico, currently fourth in La Liga and trailing leaders FC Barcelona, focus now shifts to Europe, with a Champions League semi-final clash against Arsenal FC looming on April 29.
