Breathing But Not Competing: Nigeria’s Opposition and the Road to 2027

As Nigeria steadily approaches the 2027 general elections, signs are emerging that the country may be heading toward one of the most predictable electoral cycles in its democratic history. This, according to the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stems largely from the continued disarray within opposition parties.

The party observed that groups expected to provide credible political alternatives have instead been plagued by internal divisions, populist rhetoric, and political opportunism. Rather than strengthening party institutions, developing policy-driven platforms, or presenting workable solutions to the nation’s economic and social challenges, the opposition has largely resorted to media campaigns and persistent criticism.

The Lagos APC also noted what it described as a growing internal struggle among opposition leaders, fueled by personal ambitions that appear disconnected from current political realities. According to the party, instead of fostering unity and strengthening their political structures, many opposition figures are engaged in intense personal contests, leaving their platforms fragmented and distracted.

It added that there is little evidence of serious preparation for the 2027 elections within opposition ranks. Beyond sporadic public statements aimed at maintaining political relevance, the party said Nigerians have yet to witness the level of organization, grassroots mobilization, and policy articulation that typically signals readiness for a competitive electoral contest.

The APC maintained that the continued weakness and disunity of the opposition is unhealthy for Nigeria’s democratic development, noting that a vibrant democracy thrives on the presence of a responsible and organized opposition capable of offering viable alternatives to voters.

According to the party, when political leaders prioritize personal presidential ambitions above collective strategy and national interest, the result is often internal dysfunction and weakened party structures.

In contrast, the APC said it remains focused on governance and national development at both federal and state levels. It highlighted ongoing economic reforms, infrastructural development, and social intervention programmes as evidence of the party’s commitment to delivering results and strengthening democratic institutions.

The Lagos APC therefore expressed confidence that as the 2027 elections approach, Nigerians will continue to value stability, continuity, and proven leadership.

While acknowledging that elections should be competitive and inspiring, the party stressed that credible alternatives must be built on clear visions, strong institutions, and disciplined political organization.

The party also urged all political actors to raise the standard of democratic engagement, emphasizing that Nigerians deserve constructive debates, thoughtful policy proposals, and responsible political leadership rather than fragmented alliances driven by desperation.

It reaffirmed its commitment to governance and public service, expressing optimism that Nigerians will ultimately assess performance, leadership, and vision when the time comes to make electoral choices.

Tinubu, Lagos APC endorse Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat for second term

Following speculations flying around that Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, may be denied his second term in office and that a Muslim candidate had been preferred to get the ticket, the National Leader of All Progressive Congress (APC),Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and other strong members of the state chapter of the party have cleared air on their positions by officially endorsing Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, for another term in office.By making their positions public ahead of the gubernatorial primary, it is an indication that whichever candidate also wish to pick form of interest could go ahead to do so, but would not get their support nor be anointed by them regardless of relationship that existed before now.
