In a move set to redefine international academic collaboration, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, have entered into a landmark partnership aimed at expanding access to world-class education while strengthening Nigeria’s research, innovation and human capital development.

The historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at the Senate Chamber of the Senate House, UNILAG. The agreement formalises a relationship that has evolved steadily over the past decade and reflects a shared vision of education as a driver of national development and global engagement.
Central to the collaboration is the development of high-quality Transnational Education (TNE) programmes in Nigeria. Under the agreement, both institutions will work closely with Nigeria’s Ministry of Education to develop a comprehensive proposal for a Transnational Education Unit to be located in Lagos. Subject to requisite approvals, programme delivery is expected to commence in 2027.
The proposed TNE unit will focus on priority academic areas aligned with Nigeria’s future needs, including Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Communications and Media. The initiative is designed to deliver globally benchmarked programmes within the Nigerian context, thereby broadening access to internationally recognised education while ensuring local relevance.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, described the partnership as a progressive and inclusive model that creates new learning pathways across national and global boundaries.
She noted that the collaboration reinforces UNILAG’s commitment to producing globally competitive graduates who are responsive to societal needs, adding that the agreement builds on more than ten years of productive engagement between both institutions.
“This partnership reflects UNILAG’s vision of reimagining collaborations based on mutual respect, co-creation and shared responsibility. It will foster meaningful learning experiences rooted in lived realities and experiential learning through equitable engagement,” she said.
The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Birmingham, Professor Adam Tickell, represented by the University Provost and Vice-Principal, Professor Nick Vaughan-Williams, expressed strong enthusiasm for the partnership. He said the initiative presents an opportunity for the development of Birmingham-validated programmes delivered in Lagos, extending the university’s academic excellence beyond its traditional borders.
He added that the University of Birmingham was proud to be selected, citing its long-standing ties with Nigeria and its global reputation for excellence in education and research. According to him, the institution is committed to supporting Nigeria’s tertiary education system, talent development and broader economic growth aspirations.
Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, CON, described the agreement as a practical demonstration of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, translating policy vision into tangible outcomes for students, institutions and national development.
Also speaking, the United Kingdom Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Johnny Baxter, said the partnership underscores the strength of UK–Nigeria relations in expanding access to world-class education, creating opportunities for young people and driving innovation, particularly in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence.
Goodwill messages were delivered by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, and the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Arc. Sonny Echono, who was represented by TETFund’s Director of Academics and Staff Training Development, Dr. Hadiza Ismail. Both highlighted the transformative potential of the partnership in reshaping Nigeria’s higher education landscape through research-driven innovation and solutions to real-world challenges.
With the signing of the MoU, both institutions will proceed to the next phase, which includes a detailed feasibility study and the development of shared frameworks for governance, quality assurance and academic oversight, aimed at ensuring the sustainability and long-term impact of the transnational education initiative.
