President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and former Osun State Governor, Chief Bisi Akande, as he marks his 87th birthday on January 16, 2026.
In a statement issued by the State House, the President described Chief Akande as a foundational figure in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a key contributor to the growth of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he served as the party’s first interim national chairman.
President Tinubu hailed Chief Akande’s lifelong commitment to public service, noting that his political career was inspired by the vision and ideology of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He recalled that Akande began his professional life as an accountant with British Petroleum before leaving the private sector to dedicate himself fully to public service.
The President highlighted Akande’s distinguished record in government, including his roles as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979, Deputy Governor during the Second Republic, and later Governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003.
According to President Tinubu, Chief Akande played a pivotal role in laying the foundation of the APC, which went on to make history by defeating an incumbent federal government in the 2015 general elections.
He commended Akande for his leadership, wisdom, integrity, and unwavering commitment to progressive ideals, describing him as a mentor and moral compass whose guidance and encouragement were instrumental to his own political journey and eventual emergence as President.
President Tinubu also acknowledged Chief Akande’s continued support for his administration and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that his counsel and partnership remain invaluable.
“Even at 87, Chief Akande remains a strong advocate for democracy, social justice, and good governance,” the President said, praying for good health and renewed strength for the elder statesman.
Chief Bisi Akande is widely regarded as one of the foremost figures of Nigeria’s progressive political movement and a respected voice in national affairs.
