Residents in Lagos and Abuja may soon witness intensified efforts to curb open defecation as Harpic has joined forces with the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government to expand access to clean and safe toilets in line with Nigeria’s 2030 open-defecation-free target.

The partnership was unveiled during activities marking the 2025 World Toilet Day, themed “We Will Always Need the Toilet.” The events featured the inaugural National Sanitation Conference in Abuja and a two-day community sensitisation campaign across several Lagos neighbourhoods.

According to the United Nations, 3.6 billion people globally still lack safely managed sanitation. In Nigeria, inadequate sanitation is estimated to cost the country about ₦455 billion annually and contributes to outbreaks of preventable diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea.

The renewed collaboration aims to accelerate hygiene education, expand toilet access, and strengthen national and state-level sanitation interventions to safeguard public health and improve community wellbeing.
