  • Head of Guardian TV, Ms. Lois Ogunniyi, on Monday, November 24, 2025, was robbed in a suspected one-chance incident along the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway in Lagos while on her way to Rutam House, headquarters of The Guardian.

Ogunniyi boarded a commercial minibus at Toyota Bus Stop when a man seated beside her demanded her bag. She initially dismissed the request, assuming it was a harmless disturbance, until he displayed a threatening object and warned her to comply. She soon realised the other occupants in the bus were working together.

According to her account, the bus—which had several passengers positioned in a coordinated manner—operated calmly despite people being present at the bus stop.

She narrated:

“I’ve taken public buses on this route for three years. The man beside me asked for my bag, and when I ignored him, he became forceful. No one in the bus reacted, so I knew they were all part of it. When they stopped at Toyota, they ordered me to get down. I raised the alarm immediately.”

Items stolen included her phone, laptop, shoes, food items and crucial documents, including those needed for passport renewal.

After the incident, Ogunniyi reported to The Guardian’s Chief Security Officer, Mr. Jason Nwaogazi, and both proceeded to the Mushin Divisional Police Headquarters to formally record the case.

When contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the matter would be followed up but noted that the command does not track stolen phones.

“There is a case we’ve pursued for seven months, and the stolen phone has still not been switched on,” she said.

The incident adds to the growing concerns over commuter safety and the persistence of one-chance operations in Lagos.
