Nigeria handed major boost in World Cup qualification race

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have received a significant boost in their quest for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after emerging as the highest-ranked team among all sides heading into the intercontinental playoffs.

According to the latest FIFA rankings, Nigeria sit 45th in the world — ahead of other playoff contenders including Costa Rica (47th), Cameroon (52nd), Iraq (58th), DR Congo (60th), United Arab Emirates (67th), Jamaica (69th), Bolivia (77th), Gabon (79th), Curaçao (86th), and New Caledonia (150th).

This latest ranking gives the Nigerian side a major advantage, as it places them among the top two seeded nations in the intercontinental playoffs. Consequently, the Super Eagles will need to play and win only one match to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria will first compete in a mini-tournament featuring Cameroon, DR Congo, and Gabon in Morocco from November 13th to 16th. If they advance, the Eagles will move straight to the final round of the intercontinental playoffs, where they will face one of the winners from the semi-final fixtures — most likely the lowest-ranked among them.

With this development, Nigeria’s road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup now looks clearer than ever, as they aim to return to the global stage after missing out on the 2022 edition in Qatar.
