“We Did It For Love; This Is A Love Project” -First Lady Oluremi Tinubu
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady and Wife of the President, announced that the Oluremi Tinubu at 65 Fund has received over ₦20.7 billion in contributions for the National Library project.
Launched to commemorate her 65th birthday, the initiative aims to channel public goodwill into a lasting legacy for Nigeria.
During an interactive session, Mrs. Tinubu expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming responses from individuals, organisations, and communities across the nation, highlighting the project’s importance as a symbol of knowledge and cultural preservation for future generations.
Mrs. Tinubu encouraged Nigerians to forego sending personal gifts or publishing congratulatory messages in newspapers, on television, or on the radio.
Instead, she called for donations to support the construction of a state-of-the-art National Library, which, according to her, is envisioned as a beacon of knowledge and cultural preservation for future generations.
She said responses from individuals, organisations, and communities across the nation have been overwhelming, with the fund amassing over ₦20 billion in a short period.
Speaking on her intentions, the First Lady emphasised that her efforts are driven by a deep sense of duty and patriotism, not political ambition.
“This is not about politics; it is about what I can do for my country,” she stated, underscoring her commitment to advancing education and intellectual development in Nigeria.
Lagos Panorama has reported that the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress has cautioned Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi against politicizing philanthropic gestures, specifically the donation to the National Library by Senator Oluremi Tinubu during her birthday celebration.
State APC spokesperson Mogaji Seye Oladejo issued the warning on Monday, noting that public institutions globally benefit from private donations and endowments that complement government efforts in nation-building.
Oladejo noted that such contributions should be promoted, as they reflect a shared duty to reinforce public institutions.
