Shettima Attends UNGA, Delivers Tinubu’s Message At UN 80th Anniversary

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York for the 80th United Nations General Assembly.

He is representing President Bola Tinubu at the high-level session, which runs from 22 to 28 September.

Shettima attended the commemorative meeting at the UN headquarters, where he delivered President Tinubu’s three-minute address.

The President praised the United Nations for promoting peace, protecting human dignity, and advancing global development goals.

Shettima was joined by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, solid minerals minister Dele Alake, and arts minister Hannatu Musawa.

Others in the delegation included women affairs minister Iman Suleiman-Ibrahim and officials from Nigeria’s UN mission in New York.

The Vice President also plans to announce Nigeria’s new climate targets under the Paris Agreement during the week-long session.

Permanent Security Council Seats

He will attend high-level debates, join side events, and hold several bilateral meetings with global leaders.

Earlier, Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar said Nigeria was championing a UN Global Convention on Taxation to reform global finance.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s push for Africa to gain at least two permanent UN Security Council seats under the Ezulwini Consensus.

Tuggar also stressed Nigeria’s peacekeeping role and its positions on conflicts in Gaza, Congo, and Sudan.

Governor Uba Sani said Nigeria’s UNGA participation would boost investment prospects in minerals, agriculture, and education.

Industry minister Olajumoke Oduwole added that Nigeria would host an Investment Day to highlight priority sectors like minerals, technology, and trade.
