Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced plans to bolster the role of traditional rulers in Lagos State’s governance, emphasizing their importance as custodians of culture and mediators between the government and communities.
Speaking at a three-day retreat for the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs on Friday, themed “Strengthening Traditional Institutions through Collaboration for Growth and Peaceful Co-Existence,” the governor outlined initiatives to improve their welfare and foster collaboration.
Represented by Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu praised the monarchs for maintaining peace, unity, and cultural heritage.
He described them as a vital link between policy and grassroots communities, calling the retreat a platform to align traditional leadership with state policies.
“The Council of Obas and Chiefs is a cornerstone for growth, development, and harmony,” he said.
The governor addressed challenges like boundary disputes, notably at Isheri-Olofin with Ogun State, and environmental issues such as flooding.
He urged traditional rulers to curb land encroachment and resolve internal disputes to support governance efforts.
Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, Mr. Kayode Roberts, highlighted the rulers’ role as essential liaisons, while Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government, called for cooperation to resolve ongoing land disputes.
Oba Kabiru Shotobi, Vice Chairman of the Council and Ayangburen of Ikorodu, proposed quarterly meetings with the state government and requested 5% of local government funds for traditional rulers.
He also advocated upgrading Lagos’ 37 Local Council Development Areas to full local governments and strengthening the advisory role of traditional institutions.
Oba Gbolahan Lawal, Oniru of Iruland, pledged continued support, emphasizing the rulers’ role in conflict resolution and state progress.
