Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, said the State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will continue to empower athletes and ensure they excel on the international stage.

Fatodu restated this commitment when he received the state athletes who made the country proud at the just concluded African Senior Weightlifting Championships held in MOKA, Mauritius.

Emmanuel Inakedor, Tuesday, Onome Omolola Didih, and other officials paid a courtesy visit to the DG in his office at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, to officially present their medals to the LSSC boss.

The duo were part of the Nigerian contingent that delivered sterling performances, winning an impressive 18 medals: 13 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze at the 2025 African Senior Weightlifting Championships.

Competing in the 55kg category, Didih claimed three gold medals, in snatch, clean and jerk, and the overall events. She was also named the best women’s lifter at the Weightlifting Federation of Africa organised Championships.

Tuesday, who competed in the men’s 67 kg category, won two silver medals in the snatch with a 130 kg lift and overall event, as well as a bronze in the clean and jerk event with a lift of 146 kg. With both athletes’ representation, Lagos dominated the national team in the highly successful outing in Mauritius.

Fatodu expressed pride in the athletes’ achievements, noting that Lagos would continue to contribute to the pool of national athletes. He, however, charged the weightlifters to be consistent and dedicated to the sport while assuring that Lagos State will continue to support and motivate all the athletes in various sports to attain sporting glory on the global stage.

He stated further that efforts are being made to ensure that athletes, especially those who will represent the state at the forthcoming National Sports Festival, train with modern equipment, hone their skills, and get better in all sports.

The athletes appreciated the Director-General for rewarding them handsomely and motivating them with a lot of support, promising to continue to make the state and country proud.

With both weightlifters representing the state at the 22nd National Sports Festival held next month, Lagos will set for a golden outing in the weightlifting event at the ‘Gateway Games’ in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
