Christian Chukwu, former captain and head coach of the Super Eagles, has passed away at the age of 74 in his home state of Enugu on Saturday.

Lagos Panorama gathered that the former coach of Enugu Rangers died in the early hours of the day.

As of the time of filing this report, the precise circumstances surrounding his death remain unknown.

Dr. Olusegun Odegbami, his longtime teammate and friend, confirmed the development in a post on his official X handle on Saturday. Odegbami, who won the 1980 Africa Nation Cup with Chukwu, wrote, “My Chairman has passed on. This morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, my bosom friend and teammate, one of the greatest football players in Nigeria’s football history, former captain and coach of Nigeria’s national football team, has passed on.”

Born on January 4, 1951, Chukwu served as captain of the Nigerian national team, then known as the Green Eagles, between 1974 and 1980.

He led the team to its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980 and runner-up finishes in 1976 and 1978.

Chukwu also captained Enugu Rangers FC to victory in the Africa Cup Winners Cup in 1977. Furthermore, he served as assistant coach to the Golden Eaglets, who secured Nigeria’s first FIFA World Cup trophy at the 1985 FIFA U16 World Cup in China.

Chukwu was also assistant coach to the 1994 Super Eagles team, known as the Golden Generation, which qualified Nigeria for its first FIFA World Cup finals.

Chukwu began his coaching career as the coach of the Kenya national team in October 1998.

He then went on to coach Nigeria from 2003 to 2005, where he led the team to the semifinals at the 2004 African Cup of Nations.

Chukwu had previously captained the national team to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980 and later led the Super Eagles to a bronze medal at the 2004 AFCON in Tunisia. However, his coaching stint was terminated in June 2005 during the qualification campaign for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Chukwu was later appointed as the General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of Rangers by the immediate past Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

He was a recipient of the honour, Member of the Federal Republic.

In 2019, Chukwu was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which impacted his leg. Consequently, his family initiated a GoFundMe appeal to raise funds for the Nigerian football legend’s medical treatment.

Businessman Femi Otedola subsequently provided $50,000 for Chukwu’s treatment in the United Kingdom.

The cheque was presented to Chukwu in Enugu by Philip Akinola, Chief Operating Officer of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd. The presentation was attended by ex-governor Ugwuanyi, Amaju Pinnick, former Chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation, and renowned sports journalist Onochie Anibeze.

Prior to this, Chukwu had undergone initial surgery in Nigeria, facilitated by the Enugu State Government, and had recuperated.
