Don’t relinquish the duty of cleaning the environment to the Council alone, he charges residents.
The Chairman, Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, Comrade Olusesan Daini, on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, came out in convoy with the Councillors, Department of Environment and other top management Team to inspect the drainage challenges in Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA. The exercise which started from Solawon Street, Opposite Council Secretariat Igbogbo, had the presence of the State Government Team, led by the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Hon Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke.
Engr. Agbede Olaitan, a resident of Igbogbo said the problem affecting the drainage in their own area emanated from Aga street, Ikorodu, where the people dumped heap of refuse inside the drainage due to the good slope of water in the area while they’re at the receiving end. “The Ministry of Works constructed the canal and created a channel through which the erosion will pass through, but they left it unfinished and it’s causes a big problem in the area.” Olaitan explained
Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Hon Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke, after examining the drainage system and the channel that leads to the canal in the cemetery area appreciated and applauded the people’s effort. She disagreed that the construction of the drainage channel that led to the canal was done by the State Government.
Arobieke said the government cannot build a strong concreted slab on a weak block to cover up a drainage system. She emphasised that the drainage construction is not up to the required standard and assured that further inspection will be carried out. She promised the residents of Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA that the issue of drainages would be taken care of by the state government.
In his eloquent remarks, Comrade Olusesan Daini said he had established pictorial evidence of at least eighteen areas that battles with drainage challenges. “With the presence of the Honourable Commissioner, we can establish that the Governor himself is aware of our challenges on drainage system in Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA,” he added.
He enjoined the residents of the affected areas to be patient with the LCDA as there are loads of works that needed to be done. The Chairman promised that the necessary actions needed to put the drainage system in good condition would be put in place, as well as other things that needed the government attention.
He further appealed to the residents of Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA not to relinquish the duty of cleaning the environment to the government alone. The Chairman implored the CDAs to guide against unlawful dumping of refuse on any ground which might result to outbreak of epidemics. He urged all to abide by the environmental laws and not to wait for the law enforcement agents to be on their neck before cleaning their surroundings.
