Federal Government begins payment of ASUU’s withheld salaries

The Federal Government has commenced the payment of the withheld salaries of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The Federal Government has commenced the payment of the withheld salaries of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The development was confirmed by Gbolahan Bolarin, the chairperson of ASUU at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, according to a report in The Nation newspaper.

According to the report, Bolarin said: “Yes, it is true. Payment has started rolling in.”

In October 2023, President Bola Tinubu approved the release of four months’ worth of withheld salaries for ASUU workers.

These salaries were initially withheld when the former administration of President Muhammadu Buhari implemented a ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy against certain university-based unions that had gone on strike for eight months in 2022.

Westernpost had reported how the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, promised to comply with the presidential directives regarding the exclusion of university lecturers from the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS)
