AFCON 2023: Cape Verde stun Ghana

Cape Verde stunned the Black Stars of Ghana 2-1 at the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday in their Group B opener.

Cape Verde, which created several scoring opportunities, deservedly won the match.

The tiny Island nation opened the scoring in the 17th minute of the first half. Jovane fired in a promising shot which ricocheted off the goalkeeper back to Jamiro Monteiro inside the box. He released a quick shot into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0.

Ghana equalised in the 56th minute of the game. Alexander Djiku jumped highest inside the box to meet a perfectly executed corner kick by Jordan Ayew. His header was precise and ended up inside the left post, leaving the goalkeeper flapping in the wind.

Midway into the second half, Bebe had a great chance to score. He controlled a fine pass into the box and fired the ball to the left post, but the effort was brilliantly blocked.

Just before the end of the match, Jovane wove through the defence with ease and got one-on-one with the keeper, but failed to score with his low strike to the middle of the target as Richard Ofori produced a good save.

Garry Rodrigues almost put Cape Verde in front again, he latched on to an accurate pass into the box and immediately unleashed a low shot goalwards. His effort was well saved by the keeper.

Two minutes into added time, Cape Verde made it 2-1. Benchimol sprayed a pass out to Garry Rodrigues and he had an easy job to slot the ball into an empty net.
